Patacara

Patacara

As described in Pali Canon, Patacara was a notable female figure in Buddhism who lived during the 6th century BCE in present day Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in India. She was the foremost exponent of the Vinaya, the rules of monastic discipline. In various Buddhist texts, the life history and struggle of childbirth and loss has been attributed to Patacara but some of the texts mention to be of Kisa Gotami.

Khema and Uppalavanna

During the regular meet up with the Buddha, Ananda asked him respectfully regarding the women's capability of realizing the various stages of sainthood as nuns. In reply, the Buddha confirms the realization. Without wasting the time, Ananda asked if that's the case then will the women have any chance to be ordained as nuns. The Buddha replied if the women accept and practice the Eight Garudhammas, then they are already ordained as the nun. Hence, the first female bhikkhuni to accept and practice the Eight Garudhammas was Mahapajapati Gotami. She became fully ordained Bhikkhuni. Other women also followed the path of Mahapajapati Gotami and became the nun. Khema Their and Uppalavanna Their also got the opportunity to become the bhikkhuni. In due course of time, they became the chief female disciple of the Buddha.

Luang Pu Sodh Candasaro was the abbot of Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen who was popularly known as Phramongkolthepmuni and also Luang Pu Wat Paknam. His childhood name was Sodh Mikaewnoi and was born on 10th October 1884. He founded the Thai Dhammakaya meditation school in the early 20th century.

Dignaga was the early 6th century Indian Buddhist Monk and was also the founder of Indian logic, Hetu Vidya. He was born in Simhavakta near Kanchipuram. There is very little information regarding his early years. The only information known about his early life is after he was expelled from the Pudgalavada school, he became a student of Vasubandhu. Before that, he was the student of Nagadatta.
